Love Between Two Worlds - Chapter 20

Chapter 20 — Eleanor's Last Warning "Not yet." The words stopped everything. The Crown froze above Amelia and Adrian. The Hollow went still. Even the First King seemed to forget how to breathe. Amelia stared into the light surrounding them. "Grandmother?" Nothing. Then the voice came again, softer. "Amelia, listen to me." Her chest tightened. "Where are you?" Adrian turned to her. "You hear her too?" She nodded. The first Hart looked like she'd seen a ghost. "You can't be here," the ancient woman said. "I am not," Eleanor's voice answered from somewhere beyond the Veil. "Then where are you?" A pause. "Between." The word sent a chill through Amelia. "Between what?" "Life and death." The Crown flickered. The Hollow recoiled, and suddenly Amelia understood why the first Hart had looked so afraid. "She's part of the Veil." The ancient woman closed ...

Love Between Two Worlds - Chapter 11

Chapter 11 — The Heart of the Veil

The word finally lingered in the chamber long after the voice that spoke it had faded.

Amelia didn't move. Couldn't. The ring on her finger kept pulsing, and with every beat a tremor climbed her arm like something waking up inside her bones.

Adrian reached for her.

She stepped back.

Not because she feared him. Because she no longer trusted what she might do if he touched her.

"Don't."

He stopped, and something in his face closed like a door.

"Amelia."

"You knew."

It wasn't a question.

His eyes dropped, just for a second. "Not all of it."

"But enough."

"Enough to be afraid."

She let out a short laugh, empty of any humor. "Everyone keeps telling me that. No one tells me what it actually means."

Caelan had been watching them without a word. Now he turned toward the circular opening at the far end of the chamber.

"The Veil is waking."

Adrian's blade came up. "You're not going anywhere."

Caelan glanced back at him, unbothered. "I don't need to go anywhere for that to be true."

Beyond the opening, the dark began to move — not like something walking, but like a tide. It rolled across the stone floor in silence and stopped a breath from Amelia's boots.

She froze. Adrian stepped in front of her.

"Stay behind me."

"Stop saying that."

"What?"

"Stop telling me to stay behind you every single time something happens."

"This isn't the moment, Amelia—"

"When is it ever the moment?" Her voice cracked louder than she meant it to, and it rang off the old stone. "I've spent my whole life being protected from a truth nobody thought I deserved to know. My grandmother decided. You decided. The king decided." She looked past him, at Caelan. "And now you want to decide what I believe, too."

Caelan tilted his head, something almost like respect in his expression. "Perhaps."

"I'll decide that myself."

The ring flared. The darkness stopped mid-motion, as if it had heard her.

For the first time, Caelan looked genuinely startled.

"Amelia—"

"I'm going to find out what the Veil wants from me."

She lifted her hand, and the crack running through the ring split further open — not outward, but inward, something inside it unfolding like a held breath finally released. A thread of gold light spilled from the fracture and unspooled across the floor, tracing a path between the carved symbols toward the opening.

The dark recoiled from it.

Caelan took one step back. Amelia caught it.

"You know what that is."

He said nothing.

"You know."

"It is the path."

"To where?"

"To the heart."

Her pulse jumped. "The heart of the Veil?"

He nodded once. "The place where your bloodline began."

Adrian's blade lowered, just slightly. "No."

Caelan met his eyes. "You know the place exists."

"I know what it does to anyone who walks into it."

"And yet she must."

"Not alone."

Something passed between the two men — old, and heavier than anger. Amelia looked from one face to the other, feeling like the only person in the room without the full story.

"What's inside it?"

It was Caelan who answered. "The first Hart."

Her breath caught. "My ancestor."

"Not exactly."

The golden thread pulsed brighter.

"The first Hart never truly died."

Silence swallowed the chamber whole.

"What does that mean?" Amelia asked, quieter now.

"She became part of the Veil."

The air seemed to drop several degrees. Adrian moved closer to her.

"The heart isn't a place, Amelia."

"Then what is it?"

His eyes held hers, steady even as everything else in the room wasn't. "It's a consciousness."

"You're saying the Veil is alive."

"Yes."

"And it's been waiting. For me."

"Yes." The answer came from Caelan this time.

"Why?"

His voice, for once, softened. "Because it remembers your blood."

A sound rolled out from beyond the opening — slow, immense, unmistakable.

A heartbeat.

The stone under their feet shivered. Once. Then again. Amelia felt the rhythm settle into her own chest, matching it beat for beat.

Thump.

Thump.

The ring answered in kind, and her knees buckled.

Adrian caught her before she hit the floor, his arms closing around her without hesitation. For a moment she didn't pull away — his heartbeat was right there under her ear, fast, human, warm. Real, in a way nothing else in that chamber was.

She closed her eyes. "Adrian."

"I'm here."

She hated how much those two words steadied her.

She made herself step back anyway. His hands stayed at her waist a half-second longer than they needed to before he let go.

Caelan watched the whole exchange without comment — until he didn't.

"You should be careful, Vale."

Adrian's jaw tightened. "About what."

"Love."

The word landed like a stone dropped into still water.

"That was Eleanor's weakness."

"Don't say her name."

"She loved you." Caelan's gaze slid to Amelia. "And she believed love could undo a promise written into the blood of two worlds."

Amelia looked at Adrian. "Could it?"

He didn't answer. That, somehow, was worse than any answer he could have given.

Caelan turned toward the opening. "Go to the heart."

"You want me to?"

"No." His voice dropped, almost solemn. "I need you to."

"Why?"

"Because when it wakes fully, it will choose."

"Choose what?"

His eyes went to the ring. "Which world survives."

The golden path flared white-hot. The chamber convulsed, and a fissure split open beneath Amelia's feet.

Adrian grabbed her hand. "Move!"

They ran as the floor gave way behind them, stone folding into the dark. Caelan didn't move from where he stood beside the opening.

Amelia looked back once. "Caelan!"

His voice followed them into the collapse. "Because I already chose."

Then the ceiling came down.

Adrian pulled her through the golden path a heartbeat before the stone crashed where they'd been standing. They fell into total darkness — Amelia screaming, reaching blindly until her hand found his and held on like it was the only fixed point left in the universe.

They fell together.

Down. Down. Down.

Until falling stopped meaning anything at all.

Then Amelia opened her eyes.

She was standing barefoot on something like glass, and beneath it, stars were moving — not reflected, not still. Alive.

Adrian stood beside her, staring into a darkness that had no edges.

Ahead of them, something began to take shape: a woman, tall and impossibly old despite the youth in her face, a crown of silver branches woven into her hair.

Amelia knew her before she spoke.

The first Hart.

The woman smiled — not warmly, not cruelly. Simply as someone who had been expecting this moment for a very long time.

"Amelia Hart."

Amelia's throat closed. "You've been waiting for me."

"Longer than your world has kept count."

Adrian stepped forward, putting himself half a pace ahead of Amelia. "She isn't yours."

"You still misunderstand." The woman's gaze moved past him, back to Amelia. "I have never wanted to own her."

"Then what do you want?"

The woman extended a hand.

"I want to give her a choice."

Amelia looked at the offered hand like it might burn her. "What choice?"

Something shifted in the woman's expression — the first real sadness Amelia had seen on her.

"Whether love is worth saving two worlds."

Adrian went very still.

Amelia's heart stumbled in her chest.

And beneath their feet, one by one, the stars began to go out.
