Chapter 23 — The Choice Beyond the Crown
Now choose what comes next.
The words didn't echo. They settled — deep inside Amelia, beneath thought and fear and every memory she'd inherited from people who had lived and died long before she was born.
She stood beneath the new Crown while fragments of light circled her like slow stars. No one moved.
Adrian spoke first. "Amelia."
She looked at him. His face had gone pale, the silver light beneath his skin fading, but his eyes stayed fixed on the Crown above her.
"Don't choose yet."
Aurelia laughed softly. "How predictable."
His gaze snapped to her. "Stay out of this."
"You still think this is about whether she chooses you."
"It isn't."
"Then why are you afraid?"
He didn't answer.
"Because he knows what happens," Aurelia said to Amelia, "when a Guardian becomes afraid of losing his Queen."
Amelia's stomach tightened. "What happens?"
"He becomes a cage."
Adrian stepped forward. "Enough."
The Crown pulsed, and everyone in the chamber froze. Amelia felt it move through her — not taking control, not forcing anything, only showing her what could come.
Three visions rose in front of her.
In the first, the Veil remained. Elarion and the human world stayed separate, the cracks slowly sealing, the Hollow pushed back into the dark. But Adrian stood alone beneath a black sky, his silver eyes completely empty.
In the second, the Veil was gone. The two worlds merged — mountains rising through cities, magic flooding the streets, forests swallowing buildings whole, humans and Elarions standing together beneath one sky, terrified and amazed in equal measure.
And the Hollow walked freely among them.
In the third, Amelia couldn't breathe. There was no Veil. No Crown. No Hollow. No separation between worlds at all.
And no Adrian.
She stepped back. "No."
The visions vanished. He reached for her. "What did you see?"
"Nothing."
"Amelia."
She looked at him. "I saw three choices. I don't like any of them."
Aurelia's expression softened. "Good."
"Good?"
"Then you're finally thinking like a Queen."
"I'm not your Queen."
"No." Aurelia stepped closer. "You're something worse. The Crown has never belonged to anyone — not the first Queen, not the First King, not even you."
Amelia frowned. "Then why did it choose me?"
"It didn't." Silence stretched. "You chose it."
Amelia looked up. The Crown wasn't hovering above her anymore.
It was following her.
Not controlling. Following.
"That's not possible," Lucien whispered.
"You spent centuries believing the Crown was a throne," Aurelia said.
"It was."
"No." Her eyes flashed silver. "It was a mirror."
The word struck something in Amelia. She thought of the visions again — every Crown had only reflected whoever stood beneath it. The first Queen. The Guardian. Lucien. Aurelia. All of them had believed they'd been chosen.
Maybe they'd only ever seen themselves.
Amelia reached up and touched the Crown. It changed under her fingers — gold to silver, silver to black, black to white — and then it disappeared entirely.
She stared at the empty air above her. "What did I just do?"
"You dismissed it," the first Hart whispered.
"You can control it," Adrian said, eyes wide.
"No." Amelia shook her head slowly. "It listened."
Aurelia's smile vanished. "That shouldn't be possible. No Queen ever made the Crown listen."
"Then maybe I'm not a Queen."
The Hollow stirred, hundreds of eyes opening at once.
Not Queen.
The voice wasn't threatening this time. It sounded almost relieved.
Not Guardian.
Adrian moved closer to her. "What is it saying?"
"It says we're both wrong."
The Hollow drifted toward the tear in the Veil, and the darkness parted. Amelia saw something beyond it — not another world, not another creature. A memory. A single moment from before the worlds had ever been divided.
Two children stood in a field beneath one sky. A girl with silver eyes. A boy with silver eyes. The first Queen and the first Guardian. They weren't fighting, weren't ruling. They were only holding hands.
Between them stood the Hollow — but it was small. Almost human. Almost a child.
Amelia's breath caught. "The Hollow wasn't always like this."
"No," Eleanor said quietly from behind her.
"Then what happened?"
Eleanor looked at Aurelia. "Fear."
"Don't," Aurelia said.
"You were afraid of losing your sister." The first Hart looked away. "And you were afraid of losing your world."
Aurelia's eyes hardened. "So I chose the Hollow."
"No," Eleanor said. "You chose control."
The Hollow screamed, and the memory shattered. Aurelia staggered back, clutching her chest.
"Stop."
Amelia stepped forward. "What did you do to it?"
"I didn't."
"Then who did?"
No one answered. The Crown's fragments started moving again, gathering around Amelia's hand, forming a single image: a young Lucien standing beside Aurelia. But they weren't alone — a woman stood between them, tall, silver-haired, her face hidden in shadow.
"Who is that?" Amelia asked.
Lucien went white. Aurelia whispered, "No."
Adrian turned on his father. "Who is she?"
Lucien said nothing.
"Father."
Still nothing. Adrian grabbed his arm. "Who is she?"
Lucien finally met his eyes, his voice barely a breath. "The first person who ever opened the Hollow."
The chamber shook. The first Hart stumbled back. "That isn't possible."
"It happened," Lucien said.
"Who?" Amelia asked.
He looked at her. "The woman who came before all of us."
Fear filled Aurelia's eyes — something Amelia had never seen in them before. "Her name was Seraphine."
The Hollow went still. Every eye closed, one by one. Then a woman's voice whispered through the chamber.
"You finally remembered me."
Amelia turned. The darkness behind Aurelia began to glow, and a figure stepped through it — silver hair, black robes, a crown of bone-white light, and eyes with no silver in them at all.
They were entirely black.
Seraphine smiled. "Hello, Aurelia."
Aurelia couldn't move. "You were supposed to be dead."
"I was." Her gaze slid to Amelia. "But death is only another door."
The new Crown flickered back into being above Amelia's head, trembling this time. Adrian stepped in front of her.
Seraphine's smile faded as she looked at him. "The Guardian. Still protecting what doesn't belong to you."
He raised his blade. "Come closer and find out."
She laughed and lifted a hand. The blade shattered in his grip.
"Adrian!" Amelia caught his arm.
Seraphine's gaze moved to their joined hands. "There." Her voice softened, almost tender. "That's what I've been waiting for."
Something cold moved through Amelia. "What?"
"The choice." The Crown pulsed. The Hollow's eyes opened. The Veil began collapsing around them, and Seraphine whispered:
"Choose him."
"Why?"
"Because if you do..." Her smile widened. "I win."
Adrian went completely still. Amelia's blood ran cold.
Seraphine stepped backward into the dark. "Choose him, little Hart." The tear behind her widened. "Choose him — and watch the worlds burn."
Then she was gone.
The chamber exploded into motion. Elarion and the human world began crashing toward each other through the broken Veil.
Amelia looked at Adrian. He looked back at her, and neither of them said a word — because for the first time, they both understood exactly what was in front of them.
The greatest choice left wasn't whether they would choose each other.
It was whether they could love each other without letting that love decide the fate of two entire worlds.
